Captains’ Biscuits

7 lbs. of fine flour, 6 ozs. of butter, 1 quart of water or milk. Rub the butter in with the flour until it is crumbled into very small pieces, make a bay in the centre of the flour, pour in the water or milk, make it into a dough, and break it when made into dough, chaff or mould up the required size, 4 or 5 ozs. each, pin out with a rolling pin about 5 inches in diameter, dock them and lay them with their faces together. When they are ready bake them in a moderately quick oven, of a nice brown color. These are seldom made with hand, as the machinery in use outstrips hand-made biscuits of this class in speed and gives a better appearance and quality.

  Mealtime should be one of joy and fun - not harping or frustration. To keep mealtimes happy, you should approach each with a sense of fun, not duty. Helping your baby reach his nutritional requirements should be fun - not work.

Prepare and Focus

Prepare all of the necessary items beforehand so that you can focus on your child exclusively during the meal. It’s distracting to be hopping up and down for a missing spoon or bib while trying to bond and enjoy your baby over a dish of applesauce.

Eat as a Family

Nothing will please your baby more than to eat with the family. Pull the high chair up to the table and have your child sit alongside his siblings or with just his parents as they eat each meal of the day. If you aren’t able to feed your baby while eating yourself, you can feed him before dinner and then allow him to sample mashed table foods or play with a cup of water during the actual meal - he’ll simply enjoy being around family. As he starts eating finger foods, eating with the family will become much easier, and it’s nice to have the routine already established.

Never Force

You should never force your children to eat anything. Provide only healthy options for snacks and meals and allow them to eat what they want, when they want. A snack should be small with larger servings of different foods at mealtimes, but grazing, or eating small meals frequently, is perfectly normal for children and many adults. Making food a battleground simply removes any pleasure from the meal all together. If your child is being obstinate about eating any food at all at mealtimes, allow him to go hungry until the next normal meal or snack and serve him a normal portion then. Unless there is a medial issue or he’s filling up on unhealthy snacks, he’ll eat when he’s hungry and forcing it won’t truly help matters.

Make Food Fun

To make mealtimes fun, you should focus on making food fun as well. Have your older toddler help in the kitchen. Older children can make entire dishes on their own and toddlers can help with stirring or adding ingredients. Letting your child help prepare the food makes it much more fun and interesting to eat. Arranging the food colorfully on the plate is also greatly entertaining for children - even adults love eating pancakes designed like smiling faces.

Pay Attention to Signals

Your nonverbal child will send you signals that he is filling up or is no longer interested in his meal. When he starts playing with his food or throwing it on the ground, he’s not hungry enough to eat it and you can remove a source of frustration by taking his plate and offering him a toy to play with instead. This allows him to stay at the table with the rest of the family, but you won’t have to scramble to clean up a huge mess at every meal.

  If you’re thinking about adopting a healthier diet than the one you’re eating now, you may have thought about starting a raw food diet. Maybe you’re eating the standard American cooked food diet or maybe it’s a fairly healthy diet but you’d like to eat even healthier. Maybe the hard part is knowing just how to start a raw food diet or what to eat. In any case you’ll be healthier by incorporating more living or raw foods into your diet.

One of the best ways to start out is just by slowly adding fruits and vegetables to your current diet. You can add three or four fruits to your breakfast meal and/or have an all-fruit smoothie. Your smoothie can be an all fresh fruit combination of fresh and frozen. Although fresh is best. You can use 2 bananas for a base and add to it. For lunch you can have a small salad or cole slaw and more fruit along with what you would normally have.

In any case you want to eat all your raw food first so you don’t leave much room for other foods that are cooked. The raw food will be better for you. You’ll find you start craving certain fruits and vegetables after eating them for awhile.

For dinner you can have a huge, I mean enormous salad. Use red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, romaine, spring mix or spinach leaves as a base then add a cut up tomato and avocado and any other vegetables you like. Eat this first before any of your dinner food. This is my main course at dinner time. I usually don’t have room for much else and if I do I still only have raw fruit or other raw foods.

For snacks in between meals you can have any kind of fruit, fruit smoothies, green smoothies, green juice or carrot juice, raw nuts or raw desserts of which there are many you can make easily.

Of course these are just a few ideas. There are lots of raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds to choose from and hundreds of raw food recipes you can make.

The most important thing is to just start. It does not have to be complicated and you don’t have to follow a raw food diet plan or program. There is no right or wrong way. There are dozens of way to eat a vegan, raw food diet.

There is nothing to buy except the food you want to eat, no supplements to take.   We all love our summer gardens. Whether our gardens are meant to produce colorful blooms and fragrant flowers that delight the senses or plenty of vegetables that will keep our families fed throughout the long cold winter months, there is much to be said and enjoyed about keeping a summer garden growing and thriving. In fact, many of us look for ways to prolong the lives of our summer gardens in order to get that little bit of extra life from the flowers, plants, and vegetables that we plant in them. Keep reading to discover a few ways that you can prolong the life of your summer garden for a few more days, weeks, or even perhaps an extra month of color or vegetable production.

One thing you can do to prolong the life of your garden is by planting in a raised bed. This is basically planting your summer garden in a specifically designed garden box that rests above ground. These boxes will heat up quicker and cool down more slowly allowing a little extra growing time. For small flower or vegetable gardens these are often ideal allowing flowers to continue flowering and vegetables to continue producing after the initial seasonal frosts that often signal the end of growing seasons for those plants planted below ground.

If raised beds aren’t going to work for you, it is possible to begin the plants in the warmth of the interior of your home or a smaller scale raised bed and then transport them once they have matured a bit and the frost season is over with. This gives your garden a bit of a head start though it will do little to prolong the life of your garden once the first frost hits. For that, raised beds are truly the most effective method for small vegetable gardens. Those with large crops often find alternate heating methods and acceptable expense to prolong the lives of their gardens or to ward off against frosts that occur either early in the fall or after the initial spring planting.

You could also invest in garden row covers to protect your plants and extend their life a little beyond the average growing season or at the very least protect your plants through the first frost or so. These covers keep the plants nice and toasty warm in fact, it is important that you monitor them closely when covered to avoid overheating and do not use the covers when not necessary as this can affect the growth of the plants and the yields negatively as much as it can impact them in a positive manner.

You should understand that there is no requirement that says you must prolong the life of your garden. Many people get what they want from their garden whether it be the enjoyment of beauty from the bright and colorful flowers or enough vegetables to last through the leaner winter months when vegetables come at either a premium price or lack in flavor to some degree. Once you’ve gotten what you want or expect from your garden there really is no reason to prolong its life. There is especially no reason to take extraordinary steps to do so.

That being said there are many families that feel an extra month of color will help get them through the long and drab winter months that seem to be absent of bright and vividly colored flowers and that an extra week or two to harvest their vegetables will provide an extra month of two of food. These are very valid reasons for making the effort to extend the life of a summer garden. My hope is that the information above will help you do just that. The slices used for toast may be cut thick or thin, depending on whether the persons for whom the toast is made prefer a soft or a dry toast and whether the digestibility of the toast is to be taken into consideration. If thick slices are used and they are toasted the usual length of time necessary to make the surfaces brown, the center of the slices will remain soft. Toast made of thin slices and toasted over a slow fire becomes dry and crisp during the process of browning and is more digestible than that which is moist. Such toast will not lose its crispness unless the pieces are piled in a heap while they are hot and are allowed to soften from the moisture that collects. While toast is usually served in the form of slices, just as they are cut from the loaf, the pieces may be cut into shapes of various kinds; in fact, toast becomes more attractive if it is cut in unusual shapes. The crust of toast may be trimmed off or left on, as desired.

If the best results are desired in the making of toast, considerable attention must be given to the heat that is to produce the toast. Whatever kind is employed, it should be steady and without flame. Before a coal or a coke fire is used for this purpose, it should be allowed to burn down until the flame is gone and the coals are hot enough to reflect the heat for toasting. If a gas toaster is used, the gas should be turned sufficiently low for the bread to brown slowly. Very good results are obtained from the use of an electric toaster, also. This device has become a rather common household article where electricity is used in the home, and by means of it the toast can be made on the table and served while it is fresh and hot. In whatever way toast is made, it will lose much of its attractiveness unless it is served while it is fresh and before it loses its heat. If toast becomes burned, either from a flame that is too hot or from inattention on the part of the person who is preparing it, it may be made fit for use by scraping it lightly with a knife or by rubbing it across a grater, so as to remove the burned portion.

MILK TOAST.–Milk and toast make a combination that is liked by many persons, and when these two foods are combined the result is known as milk toast. To make milk toast, simply pour over the toast rich milk that has been heated and seasoned with salt, a little sugar, and a little butter. Thin white sauce may also be used for this purpose if desired.

FRENCH TOAST.–Possibly no dish in which toast is used is better known than the so-called French toast. Both milk and egg are used in making this dish, and these of course add to the food value of the bread. French toast made according to the following recipe will prove very satisfactory.

  If you have ever walked into a health food store or a sporting goods shop, you have very likely come across what is called “muscle building food”. Muscle building food generally refers to a number of different random assortments of ingredients that some people believe increases the amount that your muscles grow after a workout.

Sometimes muscle building food can refer to herbs and minerals that are loosely associated with muscle growth. Other times muscle building food can simply be a mess of vitamins that are known to be needed by your muscles. Whatever the ingredients, one question remains: Does muscle building food make it more likely you will increase the size of your muscles?

Muscle Size and Nutrition

The truth about muscle building food is that there are only two things you need to eat when you complete your workout:

1. Protein

2. Carbohydrates

That’s it. Those two ingredients are really the only thing your muscles need in order to grow stronger. In fact, your muscles themselves only truly need protein, but that will be discussed later.

Protein

Protein is the only true muscle building food. After a workout, your muscles have grown significantly larger and built up a great deal of extra cells that gives them the appearance of being bigger than they had been before. These cells cause tears in your muscles (which is a good thing, not a bad thing).

Protein helps heal those tears faster, as well as ensures that the new cells you have created do not die away from lack of nutrition. The result is that the faster you eat protein after your workout (literally less than one minute after your workout is great, but the sooner the better), the more of the size of your muscles you can keep.

Now, many “muscle building food” supplements actually contain protein. So while there may be other ingredients that may be less than necessary, if you can find a tub of pure protein, this may actually be beneficial - however, you should be aware that it is the protein that is so effective, not any of the other ingredients.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are less necessary than proteins, and if you do eat them after a workout, you are probably still going to gain the muscle you want. But carbohydrates are still important for energy, and by getting some healthy carbohydrates in your diet as well, you are more likely to be mobile throughout your day which will mean that your muscles are still getting some extra “oomph”. It may not be muscle building food like protein, but it is still useful.

When it comes to what is truly muscle building food, the only thing you need is as much pure protein as you can pump into your body. Luckily, most of these people that advertise muscle building food are actually advertising a giant jug of protein, so they are still considerably useful. But as long as you get the protein - whether it be from these supplements or simply from drinking a lot of non-fat milk - you are going to be able to see real changes in your overall muscle mass.
